I grew up in the 80s. Back then, at least for an American kid, one of the coolest things you could own was a Hard Rock Caf\u00e9 \u201cSave the Planet\u201d T-shirt\u2014except maybe a Members Only jacket and Jordache jeans.<\/p>\n

(Side note: The Hard Rock Caf\u00e9 Chicago is closing in March. It was one of the original five and the first one I ever went to. End of an era.)<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

But this article isn\u2019t about fashion or the Hard Rock. It\u2019s about that phrase on the shirt: Save the Planet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the truth\u2014the planet doesn\u2019t need saving<\/strong>. It has survived asteroid impacts, ice ages, and mass extinctions. It will continue to exist, long after we\u2019re gone.<\/p>\n

The real issue isn\u2019t whether Earth will endure; it\u2019s whether we will.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For decades, we\u2019ve used the word sustainability<\/strong><\/a> to define our environmental goals. Reduce emissions. Cut waste. Conserve resources. But what if sustainability isn\u2019t something we can just do<\/em>?<\/p>\n

What if sustainability is something we can only achieve once we fix what we\u2019ve broken<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

The Flaw in Our Definition of Sustainability<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Sustainability, as we\u2019ve been practicing it, is about minimizing damage<\/strong>\u2014reducing our footprint, using fewer resources, polluting a little less. But when you think about it, sustainability should mean something entirely different.<\/p>\n

To sustain something means to keep it going<\/strong>. But how do you sustain a world that\u2019s already been damaged? You can\u2019t sustain a forest that\u2019s been cut down. You can\u2019t sustain an ocean choked with plastic. You can\u2019t sustain a society plagued by inequality and environmental collapse.<\/p>\n

You can only regenerate.<\/p>\n

Sustainability assumes balance, but we\u2019re already off balance. Before we can sustain anything, we need to repair, restore, and rebuild<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Regeneration Before Sustainability<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Imagine you\u2019re drowning in financial debt. If all you do is cut spending, you might slow the damage, but you\u2019ll never truly get ahead. You need to generate<\/strong> new income, pay off the debt, and build long-term wealth.<\/p>\n

The same logic applies here. We\u2019ve overdrawn on our ecological and social accounts<\/strong>. Simply sustaining what\u2019s left won\u2019t cut it.<\/p>\n

We need to regenerate first. Then we can sustain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Regenerative sustainability means designing systems that don\u2019t just avoid depletion but actively restore and enhance<\/strong> the world around them. It means projects, businesses, and economies that leave places and people better than they were before<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Simply put it is “The practice of restoring, renewing, and revitalizing natural, social, and economic systems to create conditions where life can thrive indefinitely.” It goes beyond minimizing harm by actively replenishing resources, strengthening ecosystems, and enhancing the well-being of communities.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t just a theory\u2014it\u2019s completely achievable. But to make it real, we need a new approach to how we plan, execute, and measure success<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

PRiSM: The Project Method for Regenerative Sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n

If we want regeneration to be more than a buzzword, we need a way to ensure that projects actively improve the world around them. That\u2019s where PRiSM (Projects integrating Sustainable Methods) comes in.<\/p>\n

Most project management frameworks focus on time, cost, and quality<\/strong>\u2014delivering a product or service efficiently. But efficiency alone isn\u2019t enough if the result is a net-negative impact on society or the environment.<\/p>\n

PRiSM is different. It embeds regenerative sustainability<\/strong> into every phase of a project by using the P5 Standard<\/strong>\u2014a set of five impact areas that redefine what success looks like:<\/p>\n

  1. People<\/strong> \u2013 Does the project enhance quality of life, equity, and well-being?<\/li>\n
  2. Planet<\/strong> \u2013 Does it restore natural ecosystems and regenerate biodiversity?<\/li>\n
  3. Prosperity<\/strong> \u2013 Is it creating long-term economic resilience, not just short-term profit?<\/li>\n
  4. Process<\/strong> \u2013 Are sustainability and regeneration embedded in governance and execution?<\/li>\n
  5. Product<\/strong> \u2013 Does the project\u2019s outcome support ecological and social health over time?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Instead of asking, How can we do less harm?<\/em> PRiSM asks, How can this project create net-positive impacts?<\/em><\/p>\n

    Regeneration in Action<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    Let\u2019s take an example from the energy sector<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • A traditional sustainable<\/strong> energy project might focus on reducing carbon emissions and increasing efficiency.<\/li>\n
    • A regenerative<\/strong> PRiSM-driven energy project wouldn\u2019t just reduce emissions\u2014it would also restore degraded land, rebuild biodiversity, and create new economic opportunities for local communities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Or look at urban development<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • A standard green building project might use eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient lighting.<\/li>\n
      • A regenerative<\/strong> project would go further\u2014designing living buildings<\/strong> that generate more energy than they consume, clean the air and water, and integrate urban farming and community spaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        This is the difference between sustainability as a constraint<\/strong> and regeneration as an opportunity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        The Future: Regeneration as the Path to Sustainability<\/strong><\/h4>\n

        For too long, we\u2019ve been told that sustainability is the goal<\/strong>\u2014the ultimate achievement of responsible development. But sustainability isn\u2019t the destination<\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s the result<\/strong> of doing the right things first.<\/p>\n

        If a system is already broken, you can\u2019t sustain it<\/strong>. You don\u2019t sustain a failing economy; you rebuild it. You don\u2019t sustain a polluted river; you restore it. You don\u2019t sustain an ecosystem in collapse; you regenerate it.<\/p>\n

        Sustainability only becomes possible once we\u2019ve repaired the damage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        The Role of Regenerative Sustainability in Project Management<\/strong><\/h4>\n

        This is why regenerative sustainability<\/strong> is more than just an environmental concept\u2014it\u2019s a fundamental shift in how we build, develop, and manage projects<\/strong>. Whether it\u2019s infrastructure, energy, urban development, or industry<\/strong>, we can no longer afford to measure success by traditional metrics of cost, time, and efficiency alone.<\/p>\n

        Regenerative sustainability forces us to ask:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • Does this project leave a system stronger than it was before?<\/strong><\/li>\n
        • Does it contribute to ecological restoration, social well-being, and long-term economic resilience?<\/strong><\/li>\n
        • Will its impact be positive decades after its completion, or will it require constant maintenance and mitigation?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          These aren\u2019t theoretical questions. They define whether the future we are building will last.<\/strong><\/p>\n

          That\u2019s where PRiSM (Projects integrating Sustainable Methods) comes in. It provides the structure to move beyond sustainability as a concept and turn regeneration into a measurable, actionable outcome<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

          Regeneration as the New Standard for Progress<\/strong><\/h4>\n

          For the last century, progress has been measured in economic growth, industrial expansion, and technological advancement<\/strong>\u2014often at the expense of environmental and social stability. Now, we have the knowledge, technology, and frameworks to redefine what progress means<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

          • Energy systems<\/strong> don\u2019t just avoid fossil fuels\u2014they actively restore landscapes and regenerate local economies.<\/li>\n
          • Infrastructure projects<\/strong> don\u2019t just mitigate damage\u2014they create stronger, more resilient communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            We don\u2019t need to scale back our ambitions<\/strong>\u2014we need to aim higher<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            This isn\u2019t a radical idea. It\u2019s an inevitable shift<\/strong>. Companies, governments, and industries that embrace regenerative sustainability will outperform, outlast, and out-innovate<\/strong> those still clinging to outdated sustainability models.<\/p>\n

            Because here\u2019s the truth:<\/p>\n

            • A world focused only on minimizing harm<\/strong> will always be playing defense.<\/li>\n
            • A world focused on regeneration<\/strong> will be creating, thriving, and leading.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              A Call to Action: The Work Starts Now<\/strong><\/h4>\n

              We don\u2019t need to \u201csave the planet.\u201d We need to redefine our role within it<\/strong>\u2014not as consumers of resources<\/strong>, but as stewards of regeneration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

              That means changing how we think about success<\/strong>, not just in sustainability efforts, but in every project, every investment, and every innovation we pursue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

              Regenerative sustainability isn\u2019t a niche concept\u2014it\u2019s the foundation for a livable future.<\/strong><\/p>\n

              The real work isn\u2019t in sustaining what\u2019s left. It\u2019s in reversing the damage, rebuilding stronger systems, and setting a new standard for progress.
